A. Major Function and Purpose. The code enforcement officer (officer) is a part-time FLSA nonexempt, noncivil service position. The officer performs a variety of code enforcement duties to support the activities of public safety. This position is responsible for the enforcement of civil regulatory ordinances within the town of South Prairie (town).

B. General Function. Under general supervision of the mayor, the officer performs a variety of code enforcement duties including enforcing the civil provisions of the South Prairie Municipal Code (SPMC); reports violations, hazardous conditions, safety, sanitation and health issues; responds to complaints of reported code violations; and performs other code enforcement duties as assigned by the mayor.

C. Supervision Responsibilities. None.

D. Job Duties and Responsibilities. The job duties and responsibilities represented in this job description in no way imply that these are the only duties to be performed. Employees occupying the position will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job-related duties requested by the mayor. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Drafts a code enforcement program for the town, if no program exists, and periodically reviews and suggests revisions to the program.

2. Investigates and enforces violations of the civil provisions of the SPMC, including, but not limited to, zoning/land use, public nuisances, junk vehicles, overgrown vegetation, environmental, international building and fire codes, dangerous structures, and parking.

3. Prepares and submits code enforcement reports to the mayor.

4. Testifies in administrative and judicial hearings.

5. Responds to complaints of reported code violations relating to signage, nuisances, noise, garbage/rubbish dumping, abandoned vehicles, or other code related matters.

6. Conducts field investigations of potential code violations; gathers evidence, questions or interviews complainants, witnesses, and suspects; compares facts to code requirements and makes findings.

7. Issues warnings, correction notices, and/or citations as necessary to appropriately address issues with safety, sanitation, health or other code or law violations.
